We took a step into the unknown at the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum — a tucked-away treasure in the heart of the French Quarter. This small but powerful museum opened in 1972 and is dedicated to preserving and sharing the legacy of Louisiana Voodoo. Inside, we found ourselves surrounded by candle-lit altars, skulls, ritual tools, dolls, artwork, and real offerings from people seeking spiritual guidance even to this day.
It’s not just a museum — it’s a living place of belief and tradition. Voodoo here is not about movie monsters or pop culture myths. It’s a blend of West African spirituality, Catholicism, and Creole customs, rooted in generations of resilience, survival, and magic.
The most unforgettable moment of our visit? Sam had a personal reading with the museum’s resident fortune teller — an 89-year-old man who has been practicing for nearly 40 years and now lives in the back of the museum itself. We weren’t allowed to stay, record, or even wait in the lobby. Just like that, she was ushered into the back, and the door closed behind her. What was said in that room stays between them — and whatever was revealed… well, that’s for her to carry.
We captured what we could in the video, but there’s more to explore in our photo gallery — including highlights and details too small or too sacred to film.
